After your seeds have sprouted, it’s time to transplant them into your chosen potting medium. Be cautious not to touch the taproot, and refer to the guide on planting marijuana seeds for detailed instructions.

Next step: How to plant weed seeds

Congratulations! You now have seedlings. Let’s walk through how to plant a cannabis seed without causing any damage.

Don’t worry—it’s easy! Watch the "Planting Your Seeds" video with Nate Hammer for extra help.

What do I need to plant marijuana seeds?

Before you get started, gather these materials:

  • Red solo cups (or small pots)
  • Scissors
  • Elastic bands (one per cup/pot)
  • Plastic cups (one seed per cup/pot)
  • Plastic wrap
  • Neutral soil
  • Water
  • Germ Genie (or similar product)

Note: When filming the video, we used Vegamatrix Grow instead of Germ Genie, which was still in development.

Step-by-step guide to planting marijuana seeds

Step 1

Prepare your cups, one for each seedling.

  • Pierce the bottom to create drainage holes.
  • Fill each cup with soil, leaving about half an inch from the top.
  • The soil should remain loose and fluffy.

Step 2

Add nutrients to the neutral soil using a ¼ strength grow solution:

  • Germ Genie: Add 1 to 3 drops per cup.
  • Pre-water the soil to prevent seeds from floating out of position.

Step 3

Once the water has drained, place the germinated seed into the soil:

  • Make a shallow hole about one knuckle deep.
  • Position the taproot facing down, and gently cover it with soil.

Step 4

Cover the cup with plastic wrap and secure it with an elastic band.

  • Pierce the plastic wrap for airflow.
  • This creates a terrarium that maintains warmth and moisture.

Step 5

Use a light source to maintain warmth and stimulate growth:

  • Keep a 6 to 12-inch gap between the light and the seedlings.
  • The first leaves should appear within 48 hours!

Step 6

Once the leaves appear, remove the plastic wrap.

  • Keep the seedlings under light for another two weeks or until they are sturdy.

Step 7

Transplant the seedlings into a larger pot once they reach about four inches tall.

  • They’re ready for transplanting when the second and third set of leaves have developed.
